Fort Lee Gas Station - FORT LEE - A driver veered off the highway Tuesday morning, drove through a front yard and crashed into a Fort Lee gas station, causing a fire and explosion, police said.

At 2:16 a.m., the car went onto the shoulder of Route 46, went through three trash cans and a small retaining wall, and hit an Exxon gas station, Capt. Dan Zusi said. He said the car hit two gas pumps, as a result of the fire.

An employee at the gas station flipped an emergency switch and the fire was quickly contained, Zusi said. Despite the horrific incident, no injuries were reported. Both the driver and passenger managed to get out of the car unharmed.

Hours later, with all the gas pumps turned off, an American Petroleum worker cleaned up the mess. The worker, who refused to give his name, said there was a layer that insulated the underground gas tank, preventing a major explosion.

The cleanup may include pulling cables and pipes from under the pavement, he said.
